The main topics of the 9-day conference are: How to prevent influenza viruses involved in pandemic influenza, how to obtain relevant vaccines, how to prevent and control non-communicable diseases, and WHO's fundraising matters.
Other topics to be discussed at the World Health Assembly include the International Health Regulations (2005), the United Nations Millennium Development Goals related to health, the draft WHO HIV/AIDS strategy for 2011-2015, nutrition for infants and young children, and the prevention of child injury, Drinking water safety management and climate change challenges to health.
Kassemmart Tokayev, head of the UN Office in Geneva, said in his speech at the conference that he hopes to strengthen assistance to the least developed countries in the health field. He stressed the importance of medical protection for women and children and asked them to continue to pay attention to issues such as AIDS prevention and the impact of climate change on public health.
The meeting of the day will elect the chairman of the conference and vice-chairman. Through the agenda of the conference, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan will report to the conference later in the day.
